Driver hits Portage County Sheriff Deputy with car during arrest

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Portage County Sheriff's arrested Wendy S. Miller, age 46, of 6192 Chittenden Street in Atwater Township after running hitting a deputy with her car.

Deputies responded to the address for a report of a Protection Order Violation.

As a result of this order, Miller was not to be at this residence. Upon the arrival of Deputies, they learned that Miller was inside the residence. Miller refused to come to the door. Miller fled the residence via the rear door and fled to a vehicle that was parked in the driveway.

Deputies approached this vehicle and attempted to remove Miller from the vehicle. Miller resisted all attempts. Miller then started the vehicle.

At this time, Deputy Steve Orwick was positioned at the rear of the vehicle. Miller put the car in reverse and began backing towards the Deputy. Deputy Orwick then discharged one round from his .45 cal service weapon, into the right rear tire in an attempt to prevent Miller from striking him and fleeing the scene. Miller then rapidly accelerated striking Deputy Orwick in the left leg causing minor injury.

Miller then led the Deputies on a pursuit through the allotment neighborhood and eventually pulled to a stop in the driveway of a residence 6214 Washington Street. She was physically removed from the vehicle at which time she was taken into custody.

Miller is being charged with the following:

  • Felonious Assault on a Peace Officer / 1st degree felony.
  • Fleeing and Eluding / 3rd degree felony
  • Resisting Arrest / 4th degree felony
  • Violation of a Protection Order / 1st degree misdemeanor

Miller is currently being held at the Portage Justice Center pending arraignment on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 1:15 PM at the Ravenna Courthouse. She is being held without bond.
