Family helped by hospital returns to make a donation, thank staff

One year ago today a tragic accident took a mom's life and left her two sons badly hurt.  Now, the family is giving back to the local hospital that brought the boys back to health.

A lot can happen in a year, just 12 months ago to this day a man's family was involved in a horrible wreck, but today that man returns to this hospital to thank doctors for what they have been able to do.

Ed Slattery's life changed forever that day.

"There is no closure, that is a misnomer," he told 19 Action News.

Slattery's wife was killed in a fiery wreck.

"It's just a scare that you carry around with you forever."

His youngest son Matthew, who lost 80 percent of his blood in this accident, suffered a severe brain injury and is now confined to a wheelchair.  His dad says he's just a shadow of his former self.

Slattery's oldest son is now walking and back in school.

He wears his wife's wedding band as a constant reminder of her love and as an extra show of appreciation, he donated a $100,000 check to Akron Children's Hospital.

The money will be used to create the Slattery Foundation here at the hospital which will provide resources to parents who need extensive rehabilitation.
