Amish girl killed in buggy accident

CONGRESS TOWNSHIP (WOIO) -

The Highway Patrol is investigating fatal accident that happened at approximately 11:27 p.m. Friday night on SR301 north of Interstate 71 in northwestern Wayne County.

Bryan Reed, 45 of West Salem was southbound on 5R301 in a black pickup truck when he struck an Amish buggy, pushing it into a guardrail.

The driver of the buggy, Jonas Hostetler, 22 of Homerville.  He was thrown from the wagon on impact.  He was examined by EMS on scene and reported no injuries.

Three other passengers in the back of the buggy, including Hostetler's wife, and her brother and sister, were also ejected from the buggy.

Mattie Hostetler, 21 of Homerville and Eli Zook, 18 of Wooster, were taken Lodi Hospital, then transferred to Akron General Hospital.

Sarah Zook, 11 of Wooster was taken to Lodi Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Highway Patrol reported that the wagon was painted appropriately, equipped with gas lanterns on both sides, and had reflective tape.  Both of the horses that were pulling the wagon were uninjured.

Reed, the driver of the truck, was uninjured in the crash and his truck received disabling damage.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash and criminal charges are pending for Reed. He is being held in the Wayne County Jail. The crash remains under investigation.
