Fitzgerald takes steps to mail absentee ballot applications to Cuyahoga County voters

County Executive Ed FitzGerald said Thursday that he will ask Cuyahoga County Council to approve the mailing of absentee ballot applications to every registered voter, despite efforts from Columbus to eliminate the successful program.

Last Monday, Secretary of State Jon Husted blocked local boards of election throughout Ohio from sending such mailings. Also, earlier this year, the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation (House Bill 194, which has not yet taken effect) that otherwise negatively impacts the ability of Ohioans to vote.

FitzGerald said he will seek Council's support next Monday for the mailing of absentee voter applications to Cuyahoga County residents.

"We should be expanding ballot access, not reducing it," FitzGerald said. "This is a successful program that has made voting more convenient for Cuyahoga County residents. I intend to continue it."

FitzGerald said his staff is working to finalize the process for completing the mailing. The effort will not cost county government more money, since the county had budgeted money to pay for such a mailing.
