The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has recalled pitcher Jeanmar Gomez from AAA Columbus. To allow room on the 25-man roster the Indians have optioned Matt LaPorta to Columbus.
Gomez, 23, has spent the majority of the season in Columbus where he has gone 10-7 with a 2.55 ERA in 21 starts. He is currently 2nd among International League pitchers in ERA (2.55), is tied for 5th in wins (10), 10th in WHIP (1.25), tied for 15th in innings pitched (137.2) and 15th in strikeouts (107). He was also selected to the IL All-Star Team.
The right-handed Venezuelan has also gone 0-2 with a 5.70 ERA in 5 games in 4 starts over two stints with Cleveland this year from April 19-May 5 and again on July 17.
LaPorta has spent the entire season to date with Cleveland, hitting .238 with 18 2B, 1 3B, 11 homer and 44 RBI's in 97 games.
