The Indians have purchased the contract of pitcher Zach Putnam from Triple-A Columbus. To allow room on the 40-man roster the Indians designated pitcher Jason Rice for assignment.
Putnam, 24, spent the entire season in Columbus where he was 6-3 with 9 saves and a 3.65 ERA in 44 relief appearances.
On the year he limited left-handed batters to a .205 average against and held Triple-A hitters to a .194 overall mark with runners in scoring position. He did not allow a run over his last three regular season appearances in addition to his scoreless playoff outings.
Putnam was the club's 5th round selection (171st overall) in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Michigan.
