Bedford Heights Officer involved in car accident, victim's name released

BEDFORD HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - A Bedford Heights Police Officer was taken to the hospital after an accident on I-271 Monday afternoon.

Police say the officer was in his cruiser completing an accident report in the northbound lanes just south of Rockside when a car struck him from behind.

At this time, police believe the other driver involved had some sort of medical problem, because he was driving in the grass for about a 1/2 mile before hitting the cruiser.

The driver, Jeffrey Wilt, Sr., 58, of Ravenna, was taken to Bedford Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The officer, Patrolman Maurice Ellis, 50 was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for evaluation and released.
