Driver hits pedestrian and flees, later turns himself in

SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - The Highway Patrol is investigating after a pedestrian was struck crossing South Broadway around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night.

The driver fled the scene after the crash.

The pedestrian, identified as Melissa Newsome, 37 of Sheffield Township, was Life Flighted to MetroHealth Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the car that fled, identified as Sheldon Ball, 20 later called the Highway Patrol to report that he was the driver and was at his residence in Lorain.

He told troopers that he became overwhelmed with fear and just kept driving.  After investigating, troopers learned he had a suspended driver's license.

Ball was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Driving Under Suspension.

Newsome was treated and released for her injuries.  During the investigation troopers found Newsome to be at fault for the accident and she was charged with Pedestrian in the Roadway.
