Homeless man charged with assaulting Akron cop

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Around 8PM Friday night, officers responded to a possible fight call in the 800 block of Amherst Street.

When officers arrived, they observed 49-year-old James A. Gilbert, who is homeless, tearing off siding from the house and pulling plants out of the ground.

As officers approached Gilbert he became very combative. When officers tried to apprehend him, he started fighting with officers. One officer tazed Gilbert, while the other officer tried to handcuff him. Gilbert pulled one of the tazer probes out of his back and jumped back up on his feet. Gilbert then jumped on the back of one of the officers and started choking him. The officer's partner, that was being choked, was able to pulled Gilbert off and the officers were finally able to get Gilbert handcuffed and into custody.

Gilbert was transported to a local hospital treatment and then booked into the Summit County Jail. Gilbert was charged with Assault on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Disorderly Conduct by fighting.
