Editorial: Anti poaching agreement is bad business

(WOIO) -

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald is a former Mayor of Lakewood so I guess it's no surprise why the current Lakewood Mayor and its city council have agreed to the county's much heralded anti-poaching agreement.

The anti-poaching agreement is intended to keep communities like Lakewood from luring businesses to re-locate from other towns in the county. But why would Lakewood or any other community in the county agree to such a deal?

You know, American Greetings is abandoning the town of Brooklyn for Westlake simply because they got a better tax deal. And, Westlake is the beneficiary. Is it possible that Lakewood just isn't interested in improving its tax base? You know, this anti-poaching treaty is anti-competitive.

Communities in the county ought to act first in the interests of their own citizens and that should include building an environment that is attractive for businesses to re-locate there - even if they come from somewhere else in the county.

Write and let me know what you think.  I'm Bill Applegate.
