Man who shot himself after bank robbery takeover identified

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - The Summit County Medical Examiner has identified the bank robber who shot himself after the robbery and police chase on Wednesday.

He is 20-year-old Anthony Ethridge of Akron.

Akron police and the FBI continue to investigate the deadly bank takeover, as well as a bank robbery.

Just before 10AM, the First Merit Bank on Brittain Road was robbed by three men - Deon F. Woodall, 25-year-old DeShawn A. Gall and Ethridge. Akron police tell 19 Action News it was a bank takeover, and the suspects opened fire. Nobody was injured inside the bank. The men fled the scene.

Police were able to track down the suspect vehicle, and a short chase ensued. At the intersection of North and Spring Road, the suspects bailed from the car.

Police arrested Woodall and Gall - and Ethridge fatally shot himself.

Gall is charged with one count of Federal Armed Bank Robbery, and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.  Woodall is charged with aid and abet Armed Bank Robbery for his role in the robbery.

The First Merit on W. Market Street - was also robbed Wednesday morning.

Employees reported the suspects entered the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money. The teller placed money in a red envelope and the suspects fled with an unreported amount of cash. The suspects were last seen running Eastbound from the bank.

It is unknown if the robberies are connected at this time.
