MENTOR, OH (WOIO) - Mentor Police and the Bomb Squad were called out to the Barnes & Noble on Route 20 near Great Lakes Mall Saturday afternoon.
A customer going to the door to check store times noticed a blue suitcase and immediately flagged down an officer. After consulting with an EOD trained officer, they determined it would be best to call in the bomb squad.
The employees were evacuated out the back of the store as a precaution.
Once on scene, the Lake County Bomb Team took an x-ray of the suitcase and some contents didn't look right. A robot moved the suitcase to a secure area.
In the meantime, Mentor Police learned that Great Lakes Security had seen a suspicious male the night before near the mall with a blue suitcase. While the Bomb Squad was on scene, a male was located on the other side of the mall. It was determined that he was the suspicious male from the night before. He was not cooperative with police about the contents of the suitcase.
The Bomb Squad fired rounds into the case and determined that there wasn't anything hazardous inside.
The male, a 44-year-old from Mason, OH was taken into custody and charged with Inducing Panic.
Only a small portion of the mall was shut down during the scare. The scene was cleared after about 3 hours.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.
