Akron ministry gives those less fortunate a hot meal & some hope

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - The holiday spirit is alive and well and maybe the strongest in some places, like the "Haven of Rest" ministry in Akron.

"Lord, I pray for the sisters and brothers that are here...that you would touch them," said Carmaine Duck-Cockhomose.

A prayer before Christmas dinner. Close to 800 men, women and children in need showed up Sunday  for a hot holiday meal. The things people here are thankful for are what many of us take for granted...

"Grateful for no snow. A room, heat and clean water," said Jesse Williamson.

People here have fallen on hard times and have plenty of company, especially now. They see it all around them.

This year, he people who run the Haven of Rest ministries have seen a lot of change and not for the better. The need for help greater than last year. Last year they served 278,000 meals this year 304,000.

"One of the biggest changes. Single moms, single ladies that were working and lost their jobs," said Jeff Kaiser.
But on this Sunday, one of the holiest days for so many and the hardest of times for many of the people who showed up those that come to enjoy a meal still find a reason to sing because there's something they know after coming here.
"Knowing there are people out there that are willing to help people like me and others," said Jeff Kaiser.

Everything the "Haven of Rest" ministry needed for Sunday's holiday meal was donated by people in the community..
