Lackluster Sales: Two local Kmart stores fall victim to the economy

(WOIO) - Poor holiday sales has prompted Sears Holdings Corporation to close up to 120 Sears and Kmart stores.

The two Kmart not spared are: 1105 North Court Street in Medina and 17625 Chillicothe Rd. in Chagrin Falls.

"I didn't foresee it coming I had people asking me and I thought we were going to be alright," said employee, Ken Keeler.

Kmart blames diminished layaways, while Sears cites lackluster consumer electronics and home appliance sales.

Keeler blames competition.

"As soon as that Walmart became a Super Walmart our sales drastically dropped and we could tell from that and slowly and slowly we haven't been able to come back up," said Keeler.

Sears has more than 4,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.

According to Sears Holdings the closings will save them $140 to $170 million in cash in inventory sales.
