Police: Mentally disabled patient severely burned by caregiver

A mentally disabled man severely burned by the man who was supposed to be caring for him.

Brandon Whatley was indicted on one count of felonious assault.

The 24-year-old Maple Heights man worked as a caregiver at the Bedford Heights Group Home for Mentally Disabled Adults.

In the course of his routine duties, Whatley bathed a 51-year-old resident of the facility. Whatley used extremely hot water to rinse the victim, resulting in first, second and third degree burns.

The victim was transported to MetroHealth Burn Unit where he was treated for his injuries.
