For the third time in his Akron career, forward Nikola Cvetinovic has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday.
Cvetinovic, a 6-8 senior from Loznica, Serbia, also earned two MAC Player of the Week honors last season (Dec. 6 and Feb. 28). He helped the Zips to a 1-1 record last week, including a 76-75 overtime loss to VCU (Dec. 29) and a 67-51 road win at Marshall (Jan. 1).
Against VCU, Cvetinovic led the Zips with a season-high 21 points (8-of-12 shooting) while grabbing seven boards and dishing out four dimes. Four of his seven boards came on the offensive glass.
In Akron's 67-51 New Year's Day victory at Marshall, Cvetinovic led all scorers with 14 points (6-of-9 shooting) in helping Akron snap a four-game road losing streak. He added five boards, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
For the week, Cvetinovic posted averages of 17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.0 blocked shot. He shot a team-best 66.7 percent from the field (14-of-21) and connected on 50.0 percent from long range (2-of-4). He also made 5-of-7 attempts from the charity stripe.
Cvetinovic joins Zeke Marshall (Dec. 19) and Quincy Diggs (Nov. 14) as the latest Zips to earn player of the week honors this season. Akron leads the East Division with the most player of the week awards (three) and are tied with Ball State for the overall lead.
Marshall earned his award after helping Akron to a 2-0 record against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Dec. 15) and Florida A&M (Dec. 17). Diggs was tabbed as the first player of the week this season in the MAC after Akron posted a 2-0 record to open the season (at Mississippi State; vs. Hiram).
Cvetinovic, Marshall, Diggs and the rest of the Zips open Mid-American Conference play on Jan. 7 when they travels to Oxford, Ohio, to face Miami (Ohio). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
