Caregiver charged in death of developmentally disabled man

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

Charges have been filed in the death of 40-year-old Richard J. Sonneberger, a developmentally disabled resident of a group home located at 3415 Pontius Road. 

Sonneberger apparently drown in the bathtub after being left unattended by a staff member of the home.  Police and Fire personnel were called to the home on Christmas Eve by employees after Mr. Sonneberger was found unresponsive in the bathtub. He was transported to Akron City Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Charged in the death of Mr. Sonneberger is 26-year-old Brandon L. Swain.

Swain, an employee for Evant Inc., was responsible for the care of Sonneberger at the time of his death.  Swain has turned himself in to Detectives and was charged with Failing to Provide for a Functionally Impaired Person and Involuntary Manslaughter.  Both charges are felonies. 

Swain was booked into the Summit County Jail.  No bond information is available at this time.
