Deadly high-speed police chase in Akron

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Akron Police Department is investigating a fatal accident that occurred shortly after 6AM Sunday morning near the intersection of North Arlington Street and North Forge Street.

Shortly before the accident, officers observed the vehicle near North Arlington Street and East Buchtel Avenue. As officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect, identified as Tiawn Burham refused to stop and led officers on a high-speed chase.

The officers lost sight of the vehicle near North Arlington Street and Hazel Street. Officers continued on North Arlington Street and found debris and the suspect vehicle disabled on the railroad tracks near North Forge Street.

Burham was traveling at a high rate of speed lost control, ran off the right side of the roadway, striking a utility pole and a railroad crossing lights and gate, before careening down the east side of the railroad tracks. Burham was killed instantly.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office was on scene and will conduct an autopsy today.

The vehicle crash remains under investigation.
