Indians avoid arbitration with five players

The Indians announced the club has signed infielder Jack Hannahan, pitchers Justin Masterson, Chris Perez and Joe Smith as well as outfielder Shin-Soo Choo for the 2012 season, avoiding arbitration with the five players.

Hannahan, 31, hit .250 in 2011 with 16 doubles, 8 homers and 40 RBI in 110 games and led American League third basemen with a .983 fielding pct. as he did not make an error in the second half.

Masterson went 12-10 in 33 starts for the Indians in 2011.  He struck out 158 hitters in 216 innings with a 3.21 ERA.

Perez had 36 saves for the Indians last season, with 4 blown saves.  He appeared in 64 games, and had a 3.32 ERA.

Joe Smith was 3-3 in 71 relief appearances for the Tribe with a 2.01 ERA.

Shin-Soo Choo had a rough 2011 season.  He missed half of the 2011 season because of injuries and was also arrested on suspicion of DUI.  Choo hit .259 with 8 HR's and 36 RBI's in 85 games.
