Report: Former youth football coach ripped off charity

Michael Butts Michael Butts

Medina Police arrested the former youth football coach Thursday, for his alleged role in the theft of money from the former Medina Bees Youth Football Association, a non-profit organization.

Michael T. Butts, 47, was charged in an indictment by the Medina County Grand Jury with Engaging in a Pattern of Corrupt Activity, Grand Theft and Forgery.

Butts, the former long time coach and commissioner of the youth football organization, ran the organization from 2002 until May 2011 when a concerned parent brought the missing funds to the attention of Medina Police and the investigation began.

"The indictment alleges Butts stole between $7,500 and $150,000 from the youth program which he ran for years," said Kevin Baxter, Special Prosecutor. "Our work continues as additional information is being evaluated. I want to commend the Medina Police and the State of Ohio, BCI for their diligent pursuit of this investigation."

"Betrayal of a public trust deserves to be dealt with in a public manner. We are not going to tolerate this kind of crime in Medina," said Chief Patrick Berarducci. "This has been a long and difficult investigation, but we made a commitment to it because we felt it was important for the victims of these alleged crimes to have answers."
