Alcohol possible factor in ATV vs horse-drawn buggy crash

SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

Alcohol appears to be a factor in a serious injury ATV vs horse-drawn buggy crash in Stark County.

It happened just before 6PM Sunday on Elton Street just west of Smith Road in Sugarcreek Township.

Officials tell 19 Action News Jeremy R. Venables was driving an ATV when he rear-ended a horse-drawn buggy, driven by Joseph S. Hershberger.

After striking the buggy, the ATV overturned and Venables was ejected. Hershberger was also ejected from the buggy and dragged several feet by the horses.

Venables was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Hershberger sustained injuries during the crash, but was not transported.

Venables was not wearing a safety belt or a helmet when riding the ATV.

The crash remains under investigation, but officials believe alcohol was a factor.
