The Indians acquired Russ Canzler from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.
Canzler, 25, was named International League Most Valuable Player at Triple-A Durham in 2011 where he batted .314 with 40 doubles, 4 triples, 18 home runs and 83 RBI's in 131 games. He also drew 67 walks and scored 78 runs for the Bulls and hit .356 with 17 doubles, 8 homers and 30 RBI's in 47 second half games.
He went on to make his Major League debut for Tampa after a September 11 call up and went 1-for-3 in 3 games as a pinch-hitter.
He began his professional career in 2004 after being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 30th round of the First-Year Player Draft out of Hazleton Area High School (PA). He was signed by Tampa Bay as a minor league free agent prior to the 2011 campaign.
