Canton Firefighters are investigating a deadly duplex fire.

The blaze started around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at a duplex on Penn Place NE.

Officials say a three-year-old girl died in the fire.

The child's caretaker, unable to save the girl, was seen convulsing in grief on the front lawn when crews arrived.

"She was hysterical," said a neighbor. "It's tough -- a 3-year-old girl."

The heat from the fire was so intense it melted some of the siding on the house next door. Crews initially could not get their fire trucks up the street because the utility lines were too low.

According to the American Red Cross Stark County Chapter, who responded to the duplex, two families were affected. They are providing food and clothing to one family and are providing food, clothing, and over-night accommodations to the other.

No word on how the fire started at this time.
