Man dies after crashing head-on into semi

MEDINA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - The Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident between a car and tractor trailer that happened on US 42 around 3:20 a.m. Saturday morning.

It happened just north of the village of West Salem in Medina County.

Troopers say Louis Kimberlin, 39 of Fostoria was southbound on 42 when Thomas MeKenzie, 43 of Cleveland, who was northbound, went left of center striking the semi.

Kimberlin's truck went off the side of the road, overturned and caught fire.  Kimberlin was wearing his seatbelt and escaped with only minor injuries.

McKenzie's vehicle came to final rest in the northbound lane on US 42.  McKenzie was not wearing his seatbelt and was partially ejected from his vehicle.

McKenzie was transported to Lodi's Akron General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Kimberlin was also transported to Lodi for minor injuries.

US 42 was closed for approximately six hours while the scene was cleared, ODOT placed a temporary detour to route traffic.

No alcohol or drug use is suspected by Kimberlin.  Blood results will be obtained for McKenzie.

The crash remains under investigation.

Kimberlin was hauling a bulk tanker trailer with a load of coal dust.
