Giovanni Soto, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Akron Aeros, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 9th through the 15th.
The 21-year old started one game for the Aeros last week and had a record of 1-0 with six strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Soto, who is a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, made his only appearance of the week against the Altoona Curve on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park and faced just one batter over the minimum while throwing a no-hitter in a 2-1 victory.
He struck out six batters and walked three while giving up just one unearned run. With his performance the 6'3", 180 lb. hurler became the first Akron Aeros pitcher to throw a 9-inning no-hitter at Canal Park in franchise history.
It was also just the second time in the history of the franchise that an Aeros pitcher has thrown a 9-inning no-hitter. The first was a perfect game thrown by Jeanmar Gomez at Trenton on May 21, 2009.
Giovanni, who has put together a record of 6-6 with 87 strikeouts and a 3.73 ERA in 18 starts with the Aeros this season, was acquired by the Cleveland Indians from the Detroit Tigers on July 29, 2010 in a trade for Jhonny Peralta.
He was originally selected by the Tigers in the 21st round of the 2009 draft.
