Layoffs looming at local telecommunications center

AMHERST, OH (WOIO) - Nearly 250 workers will receive their pink slips this fall. TeleTech announced Tuesday that it's laying off 247 workers on September 15th.

The Amherst Township company released this statement:

I can confirm that today we regrettably had to announce a layoff that affects 247 employees at our Lorain Office. This workforce reduction is due to the changing business needs and a decline in customer base and call volumes for one of our clients which lead to a decision to cease operations for that project effective September 15, 2012.  TeleTech operates other programs at the Lorain office that will continue to operate, the facility will remain open.

In 2010 the Park Ave. company almost shut down the entire facility, but saved it with new clients and contracts.

There is still a chance to keep all 247 if that happens again.
