Vermilion School District to begin randomly drug testing students

(WOIO) -

The school board in Vermilion voted unanimously to start mandatory random drug testing of every student 8th grade and up involved in sports or extra circular activities -- surprising though there was little to no opposition at the meeting.

The Vermillion School Board has been working on this policy for two years.  If you want to play a sport be in the band or join a club, you may be randomly selected for a drug test.

If selected for the testing, the student will then be randomly given either a hair, saliva or urine screening. If you test positive there are options including being kicked off the team or out of the program for four months.

There was no one in attendance at the meeting that opposed the testing.

The testing will start this school year and will be paid for by the district. It could cost them as much as $25,000.
