A massive street brawl turned deadly overnight in Cleveland.
Just before 2:30 a.m. Monday morning, police received reports that a large fight spilled out of the Sir-Rah nightclub on Lee Road near Judson Drive, just south of Harvard. Police say at least 100 people ended up in the parking of a strip mall across the street.
While officers were trying to control the large crowd, someone fired a gun and least one person was hit. The 21-year-old victim, identified as Damon Woodard of Cleveland, was shot in the chest four times. He died on the way to MetroHealth Medical Center.
After firing the shots, the suspect attempted to flee the scene. Officers pursued the suspect ordering him to stop, which he refused to do. During the pursuit, the suspect reached into his waistband on two occasions, turned towards the officer and the discharged his weapon. The officers were able to apprehend the man and recovered a handgun on the scene. While in pursuit of the suspect, the officer discharged his service weapon twice. The suspect was not hit as a result of the officer discharging his service weapon.
Police have 27-year-old Anthony Conner in custody in connection with this incident. He has not been charged.
