A Cleveland Police officer reportedly shot a man in the leg Thursday evening.
It happened around 6:45 PM on Saywell Avenue on the city's east side.
Police were taking a burglary report when the suspect showed up and asked the detective "Are you looking for me?" Cops say the suspect then produced what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol and the detective drew his service weapon. The detective ordered the suspect to drop the weapon but he did not. The suspect pointed the weapon at the detective and the detective shot at him.
The suspect then ran on the porch of 12322 Saywell Avenue and pointed the weapon at the detective again and the detective discharged his service weapon at the suspect. At this time the suspect dropped the weapon and ran inside the residence, barricaded himself and refused to surrender. After a brief standoff the suspect surrendered and was found to have a gunshot wound to the leg. The suspect was conveyed by EMS to MetroHealth Medical Center, where is being treated for his injuries.
Police say the suspect's weapon was a BB gun and he also had a sword in his possession.
The detective, a 25 year veteran with the Cleveland Division of Police, was not injured.
