OLMSTED TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - Police have arrested a 34-year-old man for stealing large brass bells from St. Innocent Orthodox Church in Olmsted Township.
The Chief tells 19 Action News the suspect - identified as David Diamond - showed up at D & B Auto Wrecking in Columbia Station with the bells, and tried to sell them for scrap metal.
The owner of the business thought it was suspicious, and called the cops.
The bells - which were prominently displayed in the front of the church - were taken in broad daylight after services concluded on Sunday.
The priest locked the Usher Road church following services at 12:30 p.m., and when the choir director returned at 7 p.m., the bells were gone. The bells were a gift to the church, and are believed to be worth thousands.
The bells are in good shape and will be returned St. Innocent Orthodox Church after evidence testing.
Diamond is charged with felony theft.
