Akron (WOIO) - University of Akron soccer coach Caleb Porter was officially named the head coach of the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer on Wednesday. However, Porter will finish the season with the Zips before joining the Timbers in December.
In a statement, Porter said, "I am truly excited and honored to be provided this unique opportunity to coach the Portland Timbers, an organization that in a short-time has established itself as a model franchise in Major League Soccer."
"In the meantime, out of respect to the Akron program, I will not be commenting further on this matter until after the conclusion of the 2012 college season."
Porter, who has coached at Akron since 2006, has guided the Zips to five straight NCAA appearances including a 2010 National Championship.
Porter has a career record of 106-17-14 and is currently signed through the 2020 season.
In 2009, Porter was offered the head coaching job with DC United, but turned it down to stay with the Zips.
He was named coach of the United States U-23 team which missed out on qualifying for the Olympics.
Darlington Nagbe, who played for Porter at Akron, plays on the Timbers.
