The driver who hit a 12-year-old girl on Cleveland's West Side is still on the loose, but a private security video captured the black SUV suspected in the crime.
Katie Adkins' condition was upgraded to good on Wednesday, Sept. 19. She had been in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center since the accident on Sept. 14 at West 31st Street and Denison Avenue.
Katie's mom says her daughter is off of her ventilator and breathing on her own. She's already had surgery on her femur, and will have to have more surgeries to repair other broken bones including both sides of her jaw. Doctors say Katie's broken pelvis will heal on its own.
Cleveland Police say that a black SUV was operating westbound on Denison at W. 31st struck the victim as she was crossing the street. After hitting Katie, the black SUV failed to stop and continued westbound on Denison.
Katie was hit so hard, she flew over the vehicle.
There is no traffic signal or crosswalk where the victim was crossing the street.
No one was able to get a description of the driver, but the suspect vehicle has possible front end damage and damage to the windshield.
