WAYNE COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - The Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal 2-car crash that happened Saturday around 7:00 p.m. It happened on State Route 3 at the intersection of Wayne County Road 48 approximately four miles north of the City of Wooster.
Melvin Romanchik, 36, of Wooster, was west on County Road when he failed to stop for a stop sign at SR 3 causing him to crash into an SUV driven by Thomas Lockard, Jr., 44 of Wooster.
Lockard' s vehicle rotated off the northwest side of the intersection, overturned, struck a timber fence and came to rest on its wheels. Romanchik's vehicle rotated in the roadway and came to rest on the center line, north of the intersection.
Central Fire and EMS, Canaan Township Fire and EMS, Metro Lifeflight and Medflight were called to the scene.
Melvin Perry, Jr., 59 of Wooster and Romanchik's 5-year-old son were in the car with him. Romanchik was pronounced dead at the scene, his son, who was in a booster seat, was transported by MedFlight helicopter to Akron Children's Hospital. Perry was unbelted and was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center.
Lockard's wife, Kim and their three children ages seven, nine and 12 were in the car with him. One middle seat passenger from Lockard's vehicle was transported by MedFlight helicopter to Akron Children's Hospital. Thomas and Kim Lockard as well as their other two children were transported to Wooster Hospital. All but one of the Lockards were buckled.
Troopers on scene were assisted by the Wayne County Coroner's Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation was on scene for traffic control. State Route 3 and the intersection of County Road 48 were closed for approximately four hours.
The events that led up to the crash remain under investigation.
This is the tenth fatal crash in Wayne County in 2012.
