Driver fails to stop at railroad crossing, hits train

ERIE TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

An investigation is underway after an accident involving a train and passenger car.

The crash happened on Tettau Road in Erie Township.

The driver, identified as Jeremiah Pitts, failed to stop at the railroad crossing and struck a train. His vehicle was then pushed into the railroad crossing sign, where it came to a rest.

Pitts was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The passenger in the car, Kenneth Godfrey, was life-flighted to a Toledo hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Alcohol does appear to be a factor in the crash.

The railroad crossing lights and gates were operating correctly at the time of the crash.
