USDA in Perrysburg Monday to discuss school lunches

PERRYSBURG, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - Representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are making a stop in Perrysburg Monday.

The agency's Food and Nutrition Service Administrator Audrey Rowe will join students for lunch at the high school. She'll talk to students and staff about new requirements for school lunches that began this school year.

The new standards are the first changes in more than 15 years and a key part of the 'Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act' of 2010. This legislation is all about making school lunches and breakfast programs healthier for kids.

Some of the new requirements now mandate more fruits and vegetables. Additionally, they specify types of fruits and vegetables to be served such a weekly requirement for leafy greens, a red/orange vegetable and beans.
