ODOT aims to make traffic lights safer

(WOIO) -

ODOT is making some changes to traffic lights to make those busy four-way stops safer.

It is a federal mandate that ODOT is required to make. The traffic signals above the state's 643 designated left turn only lanes need to be switched from a solid red light to a red arrow.

ODOT plans to do the work as part of regular maintenance of the state intersections.

An extremely busy intersection at Broadway and I-271 in Oakwood Village has already been changed over.

The change is being made for safety reasons, and the Police Chief in the Village agrees that, in the long run, safety will be improved. But for now, some drivers may be a bit confused. Some may see an arrow, regardless of the color, and think they can go and make their turn.

"I think there is going to be a lot of confusion and an increase in traffic crashes and close calls until people get used to it," said Oakwood Village Police Chief Mark Garratt.

The lights now will go from a green arrow to a yellow arrow to a red arrow instead of the solid red indicator.
