WILLOUGHBY, OH (WOIO) - Police in Willoughby have released dashcam video of a crash that killed a fellow officer late last month.
Officer Jason Gresko was killed in the line of duty on September 21 when his cruiser collided with a pick-up truck while he was responding to an emergency call.
The cruiser video shows Officer Gresko was responding to the call for assistance and traveling northbound on Harmony Lane. Officer Gresko activated his emergency lights as he slowed down for a stop sign at the Jack Reinhardt Avenue intersection. Officer Gresko continued northbound on Harmony Lane with his emergency lights activated.
As Officer Gresko approached the 5170 block of Harmony Lane, a slow moving 2011 Chevrolet pick-up truck that appeared to be yielding to the patrol car turned left in front of Officer Gresko. Officer Gresko attempted to avoid the truck going off the right side of the road and colliding with a tree. A witness driving southbound behind the truck observed the emergency lights and pulled to the curb and stopped.
The truck involved in the crash had four occupants, two adults and two thirteen-year-olds. There were no reported injuries to the occupants of the truck.
The crash remains under investigation and is expected to last several more weeks.
In addition to working part-time for Willoughby Police, Gresko worked with the Cleveland Clinic Police Department.
Gresko is survived by his wife and young daughter.
A memorial fund has been established for Officer Gresko. Contributions can be made to the Western Lake County F.O.P. in care of Officer Jason Gresko at any local Huntington Bank. Branch locator - https://www.huntington.com/locator/advantage.jsp
