A new high-tech boat will be patrolling the Lake Erie waters for criminals.
The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department has a 36-foot patrol boat that has equipment such as a camera that can spot things ahead based on heat given off and an advanced radar system.
Sheriff Bob Reid said the boat will cover an area not normally patrolled and said the job's too much for the Coast Guard by itself. "Our jurisdiction goes all the way to the Canadian border."
Reid said his office has a small boat, but it's nothing like the new one, which will be used for basic investigations, as well as the Northern Border Initiative under Homeland Security.
"We're looking for things like chemicals, issues involving firearms, human trafficking," he said.
