ASHTABULA, OH (WOIO) -

The Ashtabula County APL is holding an Adopt-a-Thon Saturday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Mentor Petsmart to try and save the lives of the dogs housed at their shelter.

Monday, officials at the shelter told 19 Action News they may be forced to do a mass euthanasia next week because of overcrowding.

Irene Fiala gets choked up when she thinks about what may happen, "It's heartbreaking, we do everything we can for them."

On Monday, we told you about a dog named Rusty, who was the first on the list to be put down.  Workers were happy to tell us he was adopted at Saturday's event.

They still need to adopt out about 40 dogs to ease the overcrowding issue, and hope no more dogs are brought in.

Workers told us they had people lined up today at the store waiting to adopt a dog before the event started.

The Mentor Petsmart is located at 9122 Mentor Avenue.

Adoption fees for a vetted, microchipped dog is $60.
