ASHTABULA, OH (WOIO) - A candlelight vigil will be held Wednesday night in Ashtabula in memory of a mother and daughter killed.
The coroner says 40-year-old Amparo Torres died from a gunshot wound to the head and her 20-year-old daughter, Hilda Garcia, was smothered.
Investigators say the women were killed on Friday morning at their Kain Avenue home. Their bodies were not discovered until Monday morning.
Gilberto Torres is charged with killing his wife, Amparo, and Garcia.
19 Action News has learned since Friday concerned family members have been trying to reach the pair, even calling 911 several times to report their disappearance.
Police made a welfare check on the home on Sunday.
"We did a welfare check earlier that night (Sunday) and we responded to the house and we didn't find any signs of foul play we weren't able to make entry to the house at that time," said Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell.
Two hours later, family tells us that it was Amparo's brother who would break into the home and make the grisly discovery. He was shocked to find Torres was sleeping on the couch.
After police arrived at the scene, Torres was taken into custody.
He's currently jailed on $500,000 bond.
