Officer shoots, kills woman for refusing to put down knife

MT. AIRY, OH (FOX19) -

"That's a female, he could have tazed her or whatever. He shot this woman in pure daylight in her head like she was an animal." Said a neighbor of a 26 year-old Mount Airy woman who was shot and killed by a Cincinnati police officer Saturday afternoon.

Police were called to the Park Valley Apartments in the 2900 block of High Forest Lane on a complaint about a disturbance.

The neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, says the officer arrived to find a number of people involved in a family argument. "He was telling all of them 'be quiet, stop yelling, hey stop, stop', but they weren't paying any attention to him. They were still going back and forth with each other."

Police Chief James Craig says one of the people yelling was carrying a knife. "Once they got here, officers were met by one of the disputants. The disputant was armed with a knife. The officer, from what witnesses are telling us, asked her to put down the knife and fired two shots. She was struck and it was a fatal shooting."

An ambulance was dispatched to the scene where paramedics tried to revive the victim, but she was pronounced dead moments later.

Chief Craig was joined by Mayor Mark Mallory at the scene of the shooting, where they addressed apartment residents and the media. Several detectives and crime scene investigators were also sent to interview witnesses and collect evidence.

The victim's name was not immediately released pending notification of family.

Several people, including children, were nearby when the shooting occurred. Chief Craig says he's keenly aware of the impact on the community. "There's a lot of healing that needs to take place. We want to make sure that we continue to communicate, very transparently, with this community and so there's a lot of work ahead."

FOX19 will continue to update the story as more details become available.
