Suspect killed during break-in identified

ELYRIA, OH (WOIO) -

An Elyria homeowner shot a man breaking into his home Friday morning around 2:45 a.m.

According to police, the homeowner and his wife were inside sleeping when the intruder broke into the couple's home located on Water Street.

The homeowner shot the intruder, and he was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The initial investigation revealed that residents of the home had reported a burglary at their residence on October 18 in which a television was stolen.

This burglary was believed to have occurred in the early morning hours of October 18, 2012.

Friday morning, the residents say they were awakened by an unknown man in the living room believed to be stealing the remaining electronics.

The resident called out to the man, who then lunged at him. The resident was armed with a hand gun and fired the weapon, hitting the intruder.

The intruder has been identified as 29-year-old Jeffrey Carson of Elyria.

Police continue to investigate.
