EAST SPARTA, OH (WOIO) - An infant was abandoned near the East Sparta fire station on Monday morning.
The baby, who is believed to be around one day old, was found in a basket in the grass near the city's water tower.
The temperature reading around the time the baby was discovered was 46-degrees. 19 Action News has learned the infant was dressed warmly.
Chief Jeffrey Hager tells 19 Action News they are now trying to identify the child's parents. Ohio's Safe Haven law was not followed properly because the child was left in the grass and not left with a person at the fire station.
Chief Hager also said the baby's birth was not likely at the hospital, as part of the umbilical cord was still attached.
The baby was taken to Aultman Hospital for evaluation, and appears to be in good health. She will be placed into foster care after she is released from the hospital.
