Akron weathers Hurricane Sandy

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - The worst of Hurricane Sandy is behind us and Akron has seen some disruptions in the form of around 80 downed large trees, closed roads, and downed electrical wires.

City crews were prepared for far worse and have been handling the issues as they arise. Five Parks Maintenance crews are cleaning up the roadway obstructions and expect to have all roadways cleared Tuesday. Highway maintenance and sewer maintenance have crews out clearing sewer inlets that have become clogged with leaves and debris resulting in flooded roadways.

FirstEnergy is continually evaluating outages in the Akron area and currently there are 2912 FirstEnergy customers without power. Crews will continue to restore power throughout the day.

Citizens experiencing weather related issues should call 311 to report items such as roadway obstructions, flooding, and downed wires.

Sanitation and recycling pick-up and leaf removal is continuing with minimal delays. Please place trash and recycling carts on the curb on your normal collection day. Leaves should be swept to the curb as previously notified.
