On Thursday, November 1, 2012 more than 250 students, from 10 Cleveland Metropolitan schools, will take the stage at Cleveland State University to share original works of poetry for the 8th annual America SCORES Cleveland Poetry SLAM!
This event is a fall showcase for the students, called poet-athletes, who participate in America SCORES Cleveland's after-school programming that combines soccer, creative writing and service learning to encourage youth to be engaged students, lead healthy lives and act as agents of change in their communities.
The America SCORES Cleveland Poetry SLAM! is free and open to the public. Over 500 parents, Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) staff and community leaders are expected to attend the event starting at 6:00 p.m. State Senator Nina Turner will be featured as a speaker.
America SCORES Cleveland Executive Director Debi Pence-Meyenberg said it's inspiring to see the poet-athletes share what they've worked so hard throughout the fall season.
"This is truly an amazing opportunity, not only for the poet-athletes to share their talents, but also for their parents and the community to see what these youth are capable of achieving," Pence-Meyenberg said.
