Cleveland - The Mid-American Conference announced their football Players of the Week for the games played last week. Here are the winners.
Offensive Player of the Week: Bowling Green RB Anthon Samuel
Sophomore running back Anthon Samuel (Opa Locke, Fla.) ran for a career-high 181 yards, adding two touchdowns in the Falcons' 26-14 win at Ohio on Nov. 7. Samuel added a career-high 29 carries and finished the game with a 6.2 yard per carry average.
Defensive Player of the Week: Buffalo DB Cortney Lester
Sophomore defensive back Cortney Lester (Miami, Fla.) became the first player in Buffalo's Division I-A era to record three interceptions in a game when he picked off Alex Carder three times in Buffalo's 29-24 win over Western Michigan on Saturday. His first interception came in the first quarter with the Broncos at the Buffalo eight-yard line. Lester picked off Carder's pass at the goal line to thwart Western's chance to tie the game. He returned his second interception to the Western Michigan 27-yard line, setting up Patrick Clarke with a go ahead field goal to put the Bulls ahead 23-21. His final interception came with Western Michigan trailing 29-24 and 1:23 remaining in the game. Lester picked off Carder again at the Broncos 33-yard line to seal the win for Buffalo. The sophomore cornerback added three tackles (two solo) and a pass breakup to go along with his three picks.
Special Teams Player of the Week: UMass P Colter Johnson
Junior punter Colter Johnson (Warren, Pa.) had his best game as a Minuteman with six punts averaging 44.8 yards per kick including a long of 53 yards in a 22-14 road win. Four of his six punts pinned Akron inside the Zips own 10-yard line including back-to-back punts in the third and fourth quarters that were downed at the one-yard line. Of his two punts that were not downed within the 10 yard line, one came in the second quarter with the ball at the UMass two-yard line and Johnson booting the ball 45 yards out of the end zone. The second was in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter as he punted the ball 49-yards to pin Akron at their own 22-yard line for what proved their final possession of the game.
Offensive Player of the Week: Toledo RB David Fluellen
Junior running back David Fluellen (Lockport, N.Y.) carried the ball 34 times for 200 yards with one touchdown vs. Ball State, recording at least 200 yards for the third time this season. Fluellen also topped the century mark for a sixth consecutive game, the third-best mark in school history. For the year, Fluellen has accumulated 1,381 yards, the most in FBS and the sixth-best mark in UT annals in a single season. Fluellen also surpassed 2,000 career yards and now has 2,098.
Defensive Player of the Week: Ball State DE Nick Miles
Sophomore defensive end Nick Miles (Burlington, N.C.) led Ball State's defense with 11 total tackles and one sack in the Cardinals 34-27 win over No. 23/25 Toledo at the Glass Bowl. Miles was a key part of the defense that forced two three-and-outs and two turnovers on downs on Toledo's six second-half possessions.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Toledo K Jeremiah Detmer
Sophomore kicker Jeremiah Detmer (Hilliard, Ohio) booted a 29-yard field goal in second quarter and a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter. Detmer has now made multiple field goals on six occasions this season. He is 20-of-25 on the year. Detmer's 20 field goals are second-most in school history in a single season, surpassed only by Rusty Hanna's 21 kicks in 1992.
