BEREA, OH (WOIO) - 19 Action News has obtained police booking room video that shows a former Berea officer mumbling and stumbling. That same officer is accused of stealing drugs.
Now 19 Action News has learned that not only is he getting a break in court, but he left his job with a pension.
The case involves former officer David Bernhardt. Berea police think he went on a call, took a woman's painkiller patch, then used the drugs for himself while on duty. She apparently thought the officer needed the patch for an investigation.
Berea police called in the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation who built a case for felony charges, but the courts have allowed Bernhardt to go through a first-offender's program with a chance to have his record wiped clean.
Bernhardt has since resigned, but the State Police and Fire Pension Fund has awarded him a partial on-duty disability pension.
