Judge rejects Amish leader's request for a new trial

A federal judge rejects a convicted Amish leader's request for a new trial.

In September, Sam Mullet and 15 other Amish were found guilty of conspiracy and hate crimes.

Sam Mullet was also guilty of seven out of nine criminal charges including hate crime and kidnapping.

The defendants were convicted of chopping off the beards and hair off of fellow Amish men and women to humiliate them. In the Amish religion, a man's beard is considered sacred.

The hate crime conviction carries a minimum prison sentence of 20 years in jail.

The vicious attacks happened in Jefferson, Trumbull, Holmes and Carroll Counties. Prosecutors say Sam Mullet ordered the violent hair cuts.

The men will be sentenced on January 24 at 9 a.m. They will remain jailed until they are sentenced.
