Indians Select Infielder In Rule V Draft

The Cleveland Indians today selected INF CHRIS McGUINESS from the Texas Rangers with the 5th overall pick in the Major League phase of the 2012 Rule V draft, which was held today in Nashville, TN.

McGuiness, 24, spent the 2012 season at Double-A Frisco where he hit .268 (122-456) with 25 doubles, 23HR and 77 RBI in 123 games (.366OB/.474SLG/.840OPS).  He finished 4th in the Texas League in walks (69), tied for 4th in home runs (23), 7th in RBI (77) and 8th in OPS (.840). After the season he was named MVP of the Arizona Fall League, hitting .370 (26-92) with 5 2B, 4HR & 27RBI in 25 games for Surprise. He led the AZFL in RBI and was tied for 6th in total bases (43).

The Charleston, SC native began his professional career in 2009 after being selected by Boston in the 13th round. He was acquired by Texas in July of 2010 in a 4-player trade that sent Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Boston.  The 40-man roster is again at 40.
