The family of a woman shot and killed by Cleveland Police say she had an open casket at her funeral Saturday to make a statement.
The Medical Examiner's Office has said Malissa Williams was shot 24 times. Her family has criticized the shooting as unnecessary and excessive.
Police shot Timothy Russell 23 times after they say he led them on a nearly 25 minute chase. Williams was a passenger in the car. Officers said they'd heard shots coming from the car and saw a gun. But no gun was found at the scene.
The State Bureau of Investigation is doing the follow-up investigating.
Walter Jackson, an uncle of Williams, told 19 Action News, "We want to show the people of Cleveland the tragedy the police officers are doing in the black community."
The funeral was held at the Integrated Faith Assembly on Cleveland's east side.
